What Does Matcha Taste Like? Here's How We Describe It
It's one of the most common questions we get: what does matcha actually taste like? The answer depends largely on the quality of the powder and how it's been produced. Done right, matcha is nothing you need to get used to – it's smooth, mild, and has a natural sweetness that surprises many people trying it for the first time.
Smooth, Mild and Free from Bitterness
The most common misconception about matcha is that it tastes bitter. That may be true of low-quality powders, but not of ceremonial grade matcha made the right way. Zenzi Matcha is organic, harvested from the youngest and most tender tea leaves in Uji, Japan, and has a harmoniously balanced, delicate flavour with no bitterness at all.
Think of something green and fresh, slightly earthy, with a natural roundness and a light, lingering sweetness in the aftertaste.
What Affects the Flavour of matcha?
Three things determine how your matcha tastes:
- Powder quality – ceremonial grade matcha from the first harvest, like Zenzi Matcha, delivers a soft and complex flavour. Culinary grade, which is made for baking, is more astringent and bitter.
- Water temperature – water that's too hot amplifies bitterness. Stick to around 70°C for best results.
- Amount of powder – more powder gives a more intense, deeper flavour. Start with 2 g and adjust to taste.
What Does a Matcha Latte Taste Like?
A matcha latte is milder and creamier than pure matcha. The milk – whether oat, almond, or regular – softens matcha's character and creates a drink many describe as calm and balanced. Naturally sweet, lightly green, and without the sharp edge that coffee can have.
It's also the perfect entry point if you're a beginner who wants to get acquainted with the flavour before trying pure matcha.
Does Matcha Taste Like Grass?
It's one of the most common questions we get – and the answer is: it depends on which matcha you're drinking.
Lower-quality matcha can absolutely have a grassy, sharp, or earthy note. This is often due to older leaves, a later harvest, or less careful handling during processing.
High-quality ceremonial grade matcha – like Zenzi Matcha – doesn't taste like grass. Our powder is made from the youngest, hand-selected leaves from the first harvest in Uji, Japan. Those particular leaves have a naturally high content of L-theanine and chlorophyll, which gives them the soft, slightly sweet flavour that defines true ceremonial grade matcha.
Have you tried matcha before and found it too grassy or bitter? There's a good chance you simply need to try a better quality – it makes all the difference.
What Is Umami and Why Do People Talk About It?
You may have heard that matcha tastes of umami – the fifth basic taste we associate with depth, roundness, and rich flavours. That's partly true. The high L-theanine content in Zenzi Matcha contributes to that very sense of depth and complexity that makes the flavour so hard to put into words. It's not bitter, not sour, not sweet – it's something entirely its own.
